Todd's story

Todd Alexander: Setting a personal challenge for a cause close to his heart.

In April 2026 Todd Alexander set himself a challenge: to run his first half marathon – the ASICS Runaway Hawke's Bay Marathon in May.  This was both a pretty big personal challenge, as well as a way to bring attention to a cause close to his heart.

In 2018 Todd was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, so taking on this challenge was not just about fitness, but also to raise awareness and support for Diabetes New Zealand.

Todd shared, “This journey means a lot to me. It’s about pushing myself, improving my health, and showing that even with diabetes, you can still set goals and achieve them”.

Todd was prompted to take on this challenge after taking part in a seminar called ‘Positive Medicine’ with others living with type 2 diabetes, sponsored by his NIB Health Insurance.   He had only five weeks to train but was encouraged and supported by the 11 other members of the group. Todd said the seminar had a big impact on him and helped him understand how much stress was impacting on his health, and how important it was to understand the connection between his mental health and his physical health.

During the training, Todd saw the results in his blood sugar levels too.  His HbA1c dropped from 68 to 42!  Todd said he really enjoyed the challenge and is continuing with his running by joining weekly park runs.

We are so grateful that Todd chose to fundraise for Diabetes New Zealand and a huge congratulations on completing this challenge, and for raising $330 to support New Zealander’s living with diabetes.
