Liam's story

We have been helping tamariki in Aotearoa New Zealand learn to live well with diabetes with the help of Jerry the Bear for the past eight years. Since launching in November 2017, Jerry the Bear has been included in our ‘Brave Bear packs’, which get sent to children aged 4-10 years all over the motu.

As well as the bear himself, the accompanying smartphone app supports tamariki to discover how they can still play with their friends, take part in activities and sports and enjoy life to the full - all while learning how to manage their diabetes.

One brave type 1 warrior Liam received a Brave Bear pack and his mum Hilary has shared how things have been going since Jerry came to live with them!

“Liam loves his Jerry Bear. He has even made some injection pens out of Lego!

Liam gives Jerry an injection in his tummy every time I give him an insulin injection. He is proud to be able to look after Jerry. He always holds Jerry when he has his insulin.

Jerry has already been a great friend and I'm sure he will be for years to come!”

Our free Jerry Bear programme is made possible with funding we receive from grants as well as generous donations from charities, clubs and incredible members of the public. If you would like to learn more, or find out how to order one for a child in your life, visit our dedicated Brave Bear page: Diabetes New Zealand
