"Academic success is obtainable"
We caught up with Elijah Booth, who won the Diabetes New Zealand John McLaren Youth Award in 2024 for academia.
The award is part of our annual Diabetes New Zealand Awards, which celebrates people living bravely - and often achieving great things - alongside diabetes. There are categories ranging from recognising long-term diabetes management with insulin, for services to diabetes, and a specific category for young people, who can apply in the fields of sports, the arts and academia.
What inspired you to apply for the John McLaren Award?
Nominating myself for the Diabetes NZ John McLaren Youth Award was a way for me to inspire people with diabetes to realise this disease is not limiting. I wanted to show that with determination, academic success is obtainable despite the struggles diabetes can often bring.
Can you give an update on what has happened since you won it?
Since being awarded I have made it through my first semester of University. I have made new friends, and pursued my academic goals.
What would you say to others thinking of applying for the award?
To others applying for this award I would say - be confident in yourself and your abilities. Set goals and never give up on what you are determined to achieve.
What would your top piece of advice be for a young person who has just been diagnosed with diabetes?
My advice would be to not let this disease discourage or prohibit you from doing what you love. While it can often be a barrier, with determination it can become something that is manageable, allowing you to be the person you strive to be.
