"Don't be scared, you'll get so much help"

We interviewed Alyssa, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 8 years:

What did it feel like when you found out you had diabetes?

I was so scared of needles to start with, and I was confused about what it meant for me. But because my Mum (Shelley, read more of her story here) has diabetes too, I know about it, and she helps me with it.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned since your diagnosis?

I have to listen to my body a lot more. I know when I’m starting to feel low and I have to stop and do something about it. It’s something you have to be aware of every day.

How have you found managing diabetes while you’re at school?

Everyone I have come across so far is curious and helpful, so I’m not afraid to tell people. My friend Brooke has been a big part of my journey, she is always there for me and asks me what I need when she hears me beeping. Friends understand when I need to sit and have a juice and take 5 minutes.

What’s the best thing about Diabetes New Zealand Youth Camp?

I was so happy to meet others my age just like me. I’ve made some great friends, and we do cool activities and don’t let diabetes stop us having fun.

What advice would you give a young person (and their family) who has just been diagnosed?

Don’t be scared. You get so much help and support from everyone, and you will get used to it, so it becomes just a normal part of your day.
