Dale's story

Dale - Aka ‘DJ Kelly’

For Southlander Dale Kelly (also known as DJ Kelly), volunteering is woven into everyday life. A busy dad of three boys, Dale brings his love of people, the outdoors, and music into every event he supports. As the parent of a child living with type 1 diabetes, he’s become a familiar and valued presence at Diabetes New Zealand Southland activities, always there to lend a hand and help create welcoming, memorable experiences for families.

Volunteering isn’t new to Dale - it’s something he’s done for as long as he can remember. Alongside his involvement with Diabetes New Zealand, he also volunteers with Camp Quality, helping create fun and uplifting experiences for children living with cancer and serious illnesses. Supporting families and helping others enjoy life to the fullest is something that genuinely drives him.

Dale’s involvement with Diabetes New Zealand began through his wife’s leadership in organising local events. He attends every camp and gathering to support her work, but also because he believes deeply in the value of community, especially for families navigating type 1 diabetes.

What keeps him coming back is the transformation he sees in both parents and children. As Dale explains, “Through camps and events, I often see the relief on parents’ faces as they connect with others who truly understand their experiences and challenges… For the children, being surrounded by other young people living with type 1 diabetes helps them realise they are not different or alone. They can simply be kids, have fun, and enjoy spending time with others who understand what life with diabetes is like.”

For Dale, volunteering is about connection, understanding, and helping families feel supported and part of a community. Thank you Dale for all your amazing mahi!
