Benny's year of change

One year ago, I got a wake up call

Benny CS Tai

One year ago, Benny started feeling constantly thirsty, his brain was foggy, and his vision got blurry. He thought maybe it was age — but deep down, he knew something wasn’t right.

Benny went to his doctor who ordered some blood tests, which revealed Benny had a HbA1c reading of 105.

“I had type 2 diabetes, and it hit me like a truck,” said Benny.

At first, his doctor gave him Metformin, but Benny asked himself the question: “Do I really want to be on medication for the rest of my life? Or is there another way?”

Benny decided to try and manage his new diagnosis another way – by eating smarter, moving more and in his words: “taking control.”

Benny took an approach including cutting back on carbohydrate-rich foods (without losing his love for food!) and consistently exercising by increasing his time spent walking. He’s not only seen a drop in his HbA1c to the extent that he doesn’t need medication, but he says “the fog has lifted and I’ve got energy again!”

Benny wanted to share his story to highlight that taking medication for type 2 diabetes “isn’t a free pass” and doesn’t allow you to “eat anything.” But that careful, consistent changes can lead to big benefits, and he’s “living proof”.

“If this speaks to you — it’s never too late to take the first step,” says Benny.

“One small change. One better meal. One walk. You’ll be amazed where it takes you in a year. You can do this.”
