Project Partners Programme:
Help advocate for our diabetes community
Become an Advocacy Partner to amplify the voices of people living with diabetes so we can become more powerful in our fight for more meaningful change.
Why your support matters
New Zealand faces an urgent and growing diabetes epidemic. While we’re the only national organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people living with diabetes, we just don’t have the funds needed to establish a national advocacy team to champion the crucial changes our community requires.
With your help, we can change this. Imagine a team of advocates working tirelessly across government and the health sector to:
• Secure more resources that empower people to manage their health.
• Prevent more New Zealanders from developing type 2 diabetes.
Our goal
We are looking to raise $75,000 so that we have the resources to start to tackle some of the issues outlined below.
Expand CGM funding to include insulin-dependent individuals living with type 2 diabetes—because we won’t stop until CGMs are available for all.
Increase the number of Diabetes health specialists across New Zealand
Offer free diabetes screening for high-risk groups, including young people who are developing type 2 at alarming rates.
Raise public awareness about diabetes risk factors.
Advocacy works
“After nearly seven years of advocacy, continuous glucose monitors (CGM), insulin pumps, and insulin consumables for people living with type 1 diabetes were funded from 1 October 2024. For seven long years Diabetes New Zealand advocated for this change, together with the support from the diabetes community.
This shows the power of advocacy and working together to drive the changes we need to see. Free access to these devices is a lifeline of better health and greater freedom. Quite simply, it’s a game-changer. But we still have a long way to go. Our Project Partners will help us build the internal muscle we need to keep advocating and drive substantial change.” - Heather Verry, CEO Diabetes NZ
