Meet the Team

David Strong: Diabetes NZ Youth and Type 1 Coordinator for the Bay of Plenty/Lakes region.

Who are you and what do you do?

Kia ora! I’m David Strong, the Youth and Type 1 Diabetes Coordinator for the Bay of Plenty and Lakes region with Diabetes New Zealand. I plan events, organise fundraising, and work alongside our community to make sure young people and families living with type 1 diabetes feel supported and connected.

Best part of the job?

Seeing people connect with others who just get it. Whether it’s a camp or a meet-up, there’s something special about watching kids and whānau realise they’re not on this journey alone. I also love working with our local community, who show up in such generous ways.

A moment that's stuck with you?

What stays with me most is how much love and support there is in our community. I’m constantly struck by the clinical staff who work tirelessly to support local families, often going above and beyond. And then there’s the moment I’ll never forget: watching a first-time camper arrive, look around, and realise that everyone there is just like them. Moments like that remind me why this work matters.

Go-to pump up song right now?

What are you into outside of work?

Anything and everything outdoors! I’m lucky to live in a part of the world that makes that easy. You’ll find me fly fishing on a river, paddling with my Waka Ama crew, or out on the water sailboat racing. I’m also a big tech nerd, so if I’m not outside, I’m likely tinkering with the latest gadgets or diving down a rabbit hole of new tech.

What does living brave mean to you?

To me, living brave means showing up as yourself. For the young people I work with, it might be trying something new, speaking up, or reaching out for support. It’s also about community: being brave together and knowing it’s okay to ask for help along the way.
