Workplace Diabetes Service

One of the programmes our team run is diabetes screening in the workplace.  Often forming part of an organisations’ overall wellness programme, our team offer comprehensive diabetes education and testing onsite.

Because diabetes is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing long-term medical conditions it can heavily impact a workforce, so many organisations see the value in workplace-based screening and the opportunities it creates in diabetes prevention.  By reaching people earlier, it can mean earlier intervention and helps prevent the risk of type 2 diabetes or diabetes-related complications developing.

Earlier this year we conducted HbA1c testing for the employees of Visy. There was a lot of interest from employees and they were highly engaged, with 53 people keen to be tested. A few weeks prior to the testing, our team delivered a diabetes education and awareness session, including four workshops in one day where employees came in batches throughout the day. They learnt about diabetes, its symptoms, complications, and how to prevent it.

The employees were engaged and asked many questions. The diabetes education workshop sparked interest amongst the employees, and when the team came back for testing a few weeks later, lots of employees signed up and were keen to get tested.

On the day of testing, there was a steady stream of people coming and getting tested throughout the day. Furthermore, there were a handful of people who wanted a longer consultation to talk about their unique situation.

Our Health Promotion Coordinator, Dave shares, “It’s not always easy to get to the doctor so the team were grateful for the service and the knowledge they gained from us on site.”
