Self-monitoring of blood glucose global consensus conference report
On 29-30 October 2004, a global consensus conference on Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) hosted by the International Diabetes Center, a World Health Organisation Collaborating Center for Diabetes Education and Translation, was convened at Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Five papers from this conference were published in a supplement to the September 2005 issue of the American Journal of Medicine.
The most significant of these papers is 'The Role of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose in the Care of People with Diabetes: Report of a Global Consensus Conference'. This paper summarises the 16 consensus statements produced at the conference under five headings: a call to action; methods for monitoring glycaemic control; specific recommendations for SMBG frequency; specific recommendations for SMBG timing; and successful implementation of SMBG.
