Diabetes Awareness Week 2008 18-24 November 2008
Healthy choices for all the family
There are 174,000 diagnosed New Zealanders with diabetes including their families a total of 340,000 people. There are 80,000 at risk and 800,000 overweight or obese people in New Zealand who are at risk from Type 2 diabtes. There is no question that excessive weight increases your risk of getting diabetes.
It's families that get diabetes and it's families who can manage it. We want to foster an environment that creates families and communities free of Type 2 diabetes and to help those who do have a family member with Type 2 diabetes effect change through healthy choices. Unless there are changes to our society's habits and perceptions around diet, lifestyle and exercise, the environment that is currently producing a future epidemic of diabetes will continue to do so.
Objectives of Diabetes Awareness Week 2008:
-
To stem the epdiemic we require two levels of response - community action and personal action - it is this combination that will succeed
-
Types 1 & 2 diabetes are both increasing rapidly - Type 2 is an epidemic
-
Type 2 diabetes can be preventable - at a community and a personal level
-
