Oils

Better buys
- Plant based oils e.g. canola, olive, sunflower, soybean, safflower, peanut and avocado oils. These are high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats and are more heart friendly than a saturated fat.
Good to know
- Use baking paper instead of greasing pans with fats or oils. It prevents sticking and is easier to clean up.
- Cooking sprays can be useful to lower the amount of oil used.
Watch points
- Cholesterol Free: The product may still have a high fat and energy content. Check the nutrition information panel.
- Lite or Light: Sometimes means lighter in colour or flavour – not fat content.
- Watch the total fat content of foods when trying to control your weight – oils can contribute a lot of extra energy.
- Palm and coconut oil are both saturated fats and therefore should be avoided.
