Oils

Oils

Better buys

  • Plant based oils e.g. canola, olive, sunflower, soybean, safflower, peanut and avocado oils. These are high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats and are more heart friendly than a saturated fat.

Good to know

  • Use baking paper instead of greasing pans with fats or oils. It prevents sticking and is easier to clean up.
  • Cooking sprays can be useful to lower the amount of oil used.

Watch points

  • Cholesterol Free: The product may still have a high fat and energy content. Check the nutrition information panel.
  • Lite or Light: Sometimes means lighter in colour or flavour – not fat content.
  • Watch the total fat content of foods when trying to control your weight – oils can contribute a lot of extra energy.
  • Palm and coconut oil are both saturated fats and therefore should be avoided.
