Liquorice tea - Diabetes New Zealand

Dear Dietitian

Can I drink liquorice tea?

I was devastated to learn that liquorice is not suitable for people with diabetes. I’m quite addicted to my daily liquorice log. I’m so glad you made me aware that I shouldn't be eating it. I have since found a liquorice tea in the supermarket and I’m hoping this will satisfy my liquorice craving. Is this something you would recommend?

Like you, I also love liquorice and am aware of how addictive it can become.

Unfortunately, it does appear that liquorice tea isn't a recommended replacement. While the tea doesn't contain any sugar, its sweetness comes from the natural sweetness in the liquorice root and fennel seed.

It is the compounds in the liquorice root which have the potential to alter the effects of some medications in the body.

Liquorice is also not recommended for people with a history of high blood pressure or kidney diseases, or during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Check with your pharmacy about any effect the tea may have on the medications you take and limit your intake to occasional use only.
