Dear Dietitian
I have Type 1 diabetes - how can I avoid a hypo while diving?
A friend wants me to learn to scuba dive. I've got Type 1 diabetes and am afraid of having a hypo while under water. What can I eat to avoid a hypo while diving?
The medical guidelines for diving state that people with diabetes on insulin or oral hypoglycaemic medication should not scuba dive.
The risk of hypoglycaemia is increased during diving due to the physical exertion and cold water which can increase glucose utilisation.
If your blood glucose levels are high, the risk of dehydration is increased which also increases the risk of decompression illness.
The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) can provide further information.
