Awards & Grants
To be eligible to be elected as an individual Life Member of Diabetes New Zealand, a candidate must fulfil the following conditions:
- Be clearly set apart from the many others who have contributed to diabetes by the nature or the duration of their contribution.
- Have provided exceptional service or contribution over a period of time for people with diabetes.
- Have become widely regarded and held in high esteem across the diabetes community.
- Have delivered service beyond the call of duty.

Diabetes New Zealand Awards
Diabetes New Zealand Awards may be granted to those individuals who, through their achievements or contribution to the care and support of people with diabetes and management of diabetes have created significant benefits, whether directly or indirectly, for the diabetes cause in New Zealand.
The Award recognises exceptional achievement and is made in the knowledge that personal sacrifices must always be part of such a contribution to diabetes.
Nominations must be forwarded to the Chief Executive of Diabetes New Zealand at least two months before a Diabetes New Zealand Annual General Meeting.
Sir Charles Burns Memorial Award
A Sir Charles Burns Memorial Award will be presented to any member of Diabetes New Zealand who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Awards Committee that he or she has managed their diabetes for a period of 50 years or more through the use of insulin therapy.
Applications must be forwarded to the Chief Executive of Diabetes New Zealand at least two months before a Diabetes New Zealand Annual General Meeting.
John McLaren Youth Awards
The John McLaren Youth Awards recognise the pursuit of excellence across cultural, academic and sporting fields by young people with diabetes.
This Award for Excellence is a joint venture between Diabetes Youth New Zealand and Diabetes New Zealand.
There are four awards were offered to high achievers from any of the following categories:
- Academic; and

Sir Don Beaven Research Fund
Diabetes New Zealand has a research fund dedicated to Sir Beaven to advance diabetes research.
